High Torque Connections became necessary for tool performance after Impulse launched its ActiPulse line of tools. Having the ability to use two or more friction reduction tools in the string meant that operators could drill faster and further. Drilling further also subjected tools to a much higher torque load. Impulse designers turned to the world of connections to solve this new problem. Using double shoulder high torque connections has the advantage of making Impulse tools stronger. The double shoulder stops threads from over-torquing and crawling up the single shoulder of legacy tools. Another advantage of double shoulder connections is that the side wall can be stronger and thinner to allow for more space inside the housing for new, and better tools. In addition to the benefits of handling more torque and allowing more space for tool design, double shoulder high torque connections handle cyclical loading and bending much better than the legacy single shoulder connection.
